however, wholly foreign to the English hlanguage. It is essentially
unpronounceable to most Americans.
This, of course, has its good points and its bad points.
On these pages I explore this issue of HL. My family is not the only one with
this issue, there are many others. We are though, extremely few in number in the
United States, as we are in all the countries of the world, save the handful whose
languages contain this odd cluster. It is really not that difficult to pronounce. Or to
keep the correct spelling. However, upon first seeing it most Americans are utterly
flummoxed. The few who even try are usually wrong. I'd say about 1 in 60 or so
ever get it completely right.
There is also the rather vexing issue of whether to keep the old world
pronunciation, or to accede to the wishes and realities of the vast, vast majority of
Americans who simply never have encountered this combination. I have a slew of
