No thing can be said to be one thing, or stem from one source, or have just one idea
behind it, or is done for one reason. Behind, underneath and within every single
human endeavor there are degrees. A public policy isn't only done because of a
stated reason or reasons -- but there are other considerations. Some of these
considerations are automatically assumed. Some are presupposed. Some are kept
hidden. Some are only held by a few people. Some are not known because the
reasons are hidden by lack of knowledge. Or hidden because of the suppression of
knowledge. But no thing is without degrees.
No one decides to do anthing for just one reason. The range of reasons might be
infinite or limited, but never for just one reason.
And yet we talk about most things as if they are absolutes. He's a socialist -- or
you either have socialism or capitalism.
