Social Security was set up as a retirement supplement insurance policy -- ostensibly.
From the beginning it was claimed that the Social Security number would not be used
as ID. That the system would always be there for people. Instead the system has
been doomed from the beginning. It looked like something good was happening -- but
the ever increasing population meant that there could never be enough money put
into to the system to take care of those who were getting something out of it. Also, the
system was predicated on the idea that people would die before they were eligible to
receive the money they paid in. It was a money grabbing scheme for government to
spend on other programs.
On top of that, the Social Security number has been used for decades as an
identification number. It is still expressly stated on the card itself that it is not to be
used for identification numbering. Yet people do it -- it just makes it so easy. But it
only serves to give the government too much information about the people.
