Opatovice
Vlkos u Kyjova
These maps are from the very
convenient www.mapy.cz
It's an all Czech site, but easy
enough to navigate.
Kutna Hora is where the Langr
family is from, though it appears
there are none left there now. It's
claims to fame are several. 1. St.
Barbora's Cathedral, a
masterpiece and highly unique
Medieval structure that is a World
Heritage Site. 2. It is also where
about 1/2 of Europe's Gold and
Silver came from during the Middle
Ages. Which is why Charles IV
liked living in Prague, some 40
miles away; it took a lot of money
to build those icons of his
kingdom. 3. In the suburb of
Sedlec is the world famous Bone
Church, with the bones of some
40,000 people artfully arranged in
every available nook and cranny
and open space of the small
church.
Fydek-Mistek is where Ludmila
Kaplan is from, and where there
are still relatives, now distant, still
living. It has no real claim to fame,
it is just a town.
Vlikos u Kyjov means "Wolftown
at Kyjov. Kyjov is the 'big' town
up the road, and Vlkos is the
village over the hill. Vlkos is famous
for not much, but it does have a
Tvorusky factory, which makes
the Stinky Cheese known as
Tvorusky, which is, according to
Ripley's -- the stinkiest of the
stinky cheese. I can attest to that.
The odor is, shall we say, pungent.
A comparison? Take a few well
used baby diapers, put in plastic
garbage bag, leave in sun for a
day or two, open up, take whiff --
ah, Tvorusky!
Tabor is a star shaped town, built
by the Hussites strictly for defense
against the Catholics. It's claim to
fame is that it is the place where
the first "battle tanks" were used,
in the early 1400s. They took
wagons, built a shed on top, with
gun ports, and a covered shed for
the horses, and they rode those
into battle. They were impervious
to the weapons of the opponents,
but because they could ride into
the midst of the enemy they were
quite devastating. For nearly 200
years, too.
Opatovice is a wide spot in the
road where Bohumil Herel is from.
It is not far from Kutna Hora.
