In 1995 I put on a very professional trade show in West Palm Beach. As part of the event I had five radio shows broadcasting live from the floor. They were pretty hopeless, all those journalists. What I did was grab the mikes and just go out walking and talking to people. More than a few of the radio folks said I was a natural.. But I wasn't going to do that, whatever it was. But two years later I called up WPBR and asked about doing a show. I paid $200 an hour, for one hour on Friday mornings. On my first day I got seven phone calls. I figured that was normal. I was wrong. I was told that no one ever got phone calls on their first day out. Or their first week, or even month, and just possibly their first year. "You have to get known," I was told. I figured you had to be reasonable and funny and competent. That might work better. And so I did that show, and paid my money, and it lasted a few weeks like that. Then the owner of the radio station heard me and offered me five nights a week from midnight to 2AM So I took it. And the next thing I knew I was the only late night talk show host in the whole county.
