There is a belief among many Libertarians that the United States is some
sort of Island in the world and that if we adopt the basic principles of
Libertarian thought every thing will be OK. However, we are not alone in
the world. The world is full of all sorts of creepy countries. The
complexity within the country prevents simplistic principled solutions.
The problems have built up over more than a century and cannot be
solved overnight.
Libertarian policy must taken into consideration of getting from here
to there. When looking at the Federal budget, and state budgets, there is
the tendency to talk about aggregate numbers and percentages. Yes the
2.3 trillion dollar budget is big and getting bigger. Yes, the state budgets
are bigger than ever before, too. However, it is imperative that we look
at the different parts of this spending and taxation in order to arrive at a
plan to move towards a more Libertarian world.
However much we might not like it, the United States is engaged all
over the world. And however much it might seem anti-libertarian the
United States is the only government that can do anything about the
massive problems the world over.
In a realistic political movement the perceptions and actualities must
be considered. Libertarians can't propose a legal and principled future
and then also say that we should just cut the Federal budget in half or by
more. We have to propose concrete solutions and actual legislation to
repeal odious laws and taxes. Merely proposing to pull the rug out from
under everyone in the name of principle is not ever going to get
Libertarians elected. Yet the platform of the party and the main
proponents of Libertarianism in the public eye keep up the mantra -- "pull
the rug, pull the rug." This is a program for staying a fringe party that
those in power look at and say, "isn't that cute, but hey, we can ignore
them because they don't stand a chance." The political reality is that we
are not ever going to get elected if we merely spout principle.
So let's look at some concrete policies we can propose and actually
get somewhere with. We know that we won't get to our destination --
but every journey starts with the first step. We are not going to just
beam ourselves from here to there, like Captain Kirk.
