"Society" can't want anything.  It can't ask or tell or speak.  There are no
rights for society.  Society is always a bunch of self-appointed people
who think they know what is best for people.  Virtually every single thing
that you hear "society" wants is always faced by some opposition or total
apathy.

In the face of apathy the people who are arguing for and
implementing what "society" wants obviously are doing something so
innocuous that no one is given to complain or rise up in active
opposition.

But when a number of people ignore the so-called wishes of Society
it is obvious that in reality only a portion of society reallly wants the thing
-- and another portion is against the thing.

Look at marijuana:  it is said that "society" is against marijuana -- but
this is clearly not the case.  We are all part of society -- and yet millions
of people smoke marijuana and millions more are against making it
illegal.  Clealy a large portion of "society" has no problem with
marijuana.

If people really wanted to preserve the past then they would not be
so driven to tear down every old building.  There are people who like old
buildings, and there are people who dislike old buildings.  There is
always going to be people who want to force everyone to preserve every
old building.  So that nothing new is ever built.
